Lira, Uganda – 14 August 2024 – In a groundbreaking move, UMEME has initiated the construction of a state-of-the-art underground electricity line to supply power to Lira Regional Referral Hospital.

Lira Regional Referral Hospital

This pioneering project, valued at $500,000, promises to revolutionize the hospital’s power infrastructure and put an end to the perennial issue of power blackouts.

The 2.7-kilometer transmission line will directly connect the Lira Power Station in Kakoge, Lira City, to the hospital, ensuring a reliable and consistent power supply.

The project, slated for completion within two months, is being executed by Hest Engineering Company Ltd., under the watchful eye of Eng. Muwanga John Bosco.

According to Magezi Samuel, UMEME Project Investment Manager, this initiative is a permanent solution to the hospital’s power challenges.

“We are committed to providing a reliable power supply to this critical healthcare facility, and this project marks a significant milestone in our efforts,” he stated.

The project is part of a broader government-led initiative aimed at eliminating power outages in regional hospitals nationwide.

Kaujju Peter, UMEME Public Relations Officer, emphasized the importance of this project, warning against the theft of electricity distribution equipment, which he stressed is illegal and undermines the effectiveness of such initiatives

Dr. Nathan Onyaci, Director of Lira Regional Referral Hospital, expressed his profound gratitude for the project, highlighting its significance in enabling the hospital to operate more effectively.

“This project will transform our ability to provide quality healthcare services to the community, and we are deeply appreciative of UMEME’s efforts,” he said.

The construction of the underground electricity line is expected to bring numerous benefits to the hospital, including: A reliable and consistent power supply, reducing the risk of power blackouts and associated risks to patient care, enhanced operational efficiency, enabling the hospital to provide quality healthcare services without interruption and improved patient outcomes, resulting from the availability of reliable power for critical medical equipment

This ambitious project demonstrates UMEME’s commitment to supporting Uganda’s healthcare sector and ensuring that critical facilities like Lira Regional Referral Hospital have access to reliable power.
