Lira, Uganda – Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Lawrence Egole has called for unity, professionalism and vigilance among security personnel, community leaders and residents of Lira City to maintain peace and stability as the region enters a new year filled with challenges and opportunities.

Speaking during a meeting with police officers, religious leaders and members of the business community on December 30, 2024 in Lira City, Egole acknowledged the progress made in transforming Lira City into a peaceful hub.

He commended the joint efforts of security teams, religious groups and stakeholders in reducing criminal activities and creating a safe environment.

“We have made significant strides in turning Lira City from a center of insecurity to a model of peace. This success is a result of teamwork and dedication,” Egole noted.

The RCC applauded the efforts of the Regional Police Commander, District Police Commanders and various departmental heads for their leadership in maintaining order.

He stressed the need for continued collaboration, urging officers to prioritize professionalism and integrity in their duties.

Egole also highlighted the importance of engaging with the community, including religious leaders and local businesses, to foster trust and cooperation.

He singled out businessman and security supporter Patrick Olet for his contributions, describing him as a critical ally in promoting peace and development in the region.

Egole cautioned against complacency as Lira City prepares for New Year celebrations, citing the expected influx of visitors and an increase in fireworks displays, with over 80 permits issued in the region.

He called on security teams to remain alert and ensure that residents celebrate safely.

Looking ahead to the 2025 general elections, the RCC emphasized the critical role of Lira City as a benchmark for peace in the Lango sub-region.

“Lira City sets the tone for the entire region. By maintaining professionalism and neutrality, we can deliver a peaceful and credible election,” he said.

Egole also addressed emerging health concerns, revealing that six cases of a suspected monkey pox outbreak had been reported in Lira City.

He urged security personnel to protect their health and assist in community awareness to curb the spread of infections.

The RCC praised the resilience and commitment of the city’s security teams, religious groups and business leaders.

“You are the backbone of this region’s stability. Let us carry forward this spirit of unity and professionalism into 2025. Together, we can overcome any challenge,” he said.

The meeting ended with a renewed commitment to cooperation and a shared vision of peace and development for Lira City in the year ahead.
