Soroti, Uganda – In Soroti City, a group of single mothers has found new hope through a free tailoring training programme launched by the Teso Children Development Foundation (TECDEFO).
The initiative, aimed at empowering women to become self-reliant, runs alongside the organisation’s broader efforts to rescue and rehabilitate children living on the streets.
Seven single mothers have so far enrolled in the six-month course, which includes hands-on tailoring lessons and business skills training.
Upon completion, each participant will receive a sewing machine to help them establish their own enterprises.
The programme was launched in response to growing concerns over poverty and the vulnerability of children in single-parent households.
TECDEFO Director Denis Okwera said the initiative aims to give mothers a second chance while addressing the root causes of child neglect and street life.
Esther Amalo, a young mother from Oderai in Soroti City, said the opportunity had brought her hope.
“…This training means I will be able to support myself and my child. It’s a new beginning…,” she said.
Suzan Arebo from Opuyo shared a similar sentiment.
“…I always dreamed of becoming a tailor but couldn’t afford the training. Now, I see a future for me and my child…,” she said.
Esther Ruth Ayato, a single mother from Amen A, added that the skills she is acquiring will help her gain financial independence and stability.
“…I want to stand on my own and raise my children with dignity…,” she said.
Meanwhile, TECDEFO has also rescued at least 14 street children in Soroti City this year, enrolling them in a one-year rehabilitation programme that includes counselling, vocational training, and education sponsorship.
The children, who come from different areas in the Teso Sub-region, are currently staying at TECDEFO’s Children’s Home in Soroti City’s West Division.
The programme, now in its 11th phase since launching in 2018, targets 25 children annually.
“…It’s a process to reach all the children in need, because not every child on the street requires the same form of intervention…,” Mr. Okwera said.
Vocational training options available to the children include tailoring, mechanics, carpentry, and phone repair.
Those who wish to return to school will be sponsored accordingly.
Graduates of the programme will receive a resettlement kit, including essential tools, food and bedding, to help them restart their lives.
Some of the children shared personal stories of hardship and renewed hope.
Joseph Ereu from Awaliwal in Soroti District said poverty had forced him out of his home, but he now believes he has a chance to change his life.
Jonathan Okorio from Amuria District said he left home due to abuse from his father and is determined to return after rehabilitation.
Michael Ebulu of Orungo Sub-County praised TECDEFO, saying the support he received was more than he ever got at home.
Earlier this year, on 20 January, TECDEFO successfully resettled 22 rehabilitated children across various villages in the Teso region, providing support worth Shs32 million.
Founded in 2009, TECDEFO is a faith-based, non-profit organisation that supports vulnerable children in Northern, Eastern and Karamoja regions of Uganda.
Its work focuses on rescuing street children, empowering single mothers and fostering long-term community development.
