Susan Apili: A New Vision for Oyam Woman MP

Oyam, Uganda – In the upcoming 2026 elections, Susan Apili Okech is emerging as a strong contender for the Woman Member of Parliament (WMP) seat for Oyam District.

With a clear focus on education, healthcare and women’s empowerment, Apili brings a fresh perspective to the race, positioning herself as a leader capable of driving meaningful change.

Apili’s campaign is deeply rooted in her long-standing commitment to the people of Oyam.

Over the past two decades, she has been the driving force behind Oyam Parents Nursery and Primary School, providing free education to orphans and children from disadvantaged families.

“I’ve supported over 20 students through university, and many more through vocational training,” Apili explained.

Her dedication to education has already transformed lives, offering countless children a path out of poverty.

In addition to her educational initiatives, Apili has actively supported local churches and community development projects.

“I’ve always believed in working for the people, not just talking about it,” she said.

Her community-centered approach has earned her widespread trust and respect.

Apili’s decision to run for WMP was driven by frustrations with the current leadership.

The incumbent, Hon. Santa Alum Ogwang, has held the seat for 15 years, but Philips Ogile Jakayo, Political Assistant to Apili and Local Council III Chairperson of Abok Sub-County, argues that her leadership has fallen short in delivering tangible benefits.

“We need someone who can lobby for the district, not just sit in parliament,” Ogile said.

One of Apili’s top priorities is healthcare. She plans to push for the elevation of Anyeke Health Centre IV to a district hospital, a long-overdue upgrade that would bring essential medical services closer to the people.

“Residents have been forced to travel long distances for basic healthcare, and it’s time that changes,” Apili emphasized.

Apili’s campaign also focuses on women’s empowerment. She points out that under the current leadership, there has been little effort to develop initiatives specifically aimed at supporting women in Oyam.

“Women need a voice in parliament and they need access to resources to improve their lives,” she said.

In addition to addressing women’s needs, Apili has also made education a cornerstone of her platform.

“Children in Oyam shouldn’t miss out on education due to poverty. I’ve already been working to support vulnerable students and I’ll continue to do so as WMP,” she promised.

Ogile acknowledges the challenges Apili’s campaign faces. “The long distances and dispersed populations make it difficult to connect with everyone,” he said. “Additionally, internal divisions within the NRM create uncertainty.”

However, Ogile remains optimistic. “We’re focusing on grassroots outreach, speaking to the people and sharing our vision,” she said.

Apili represents hope for many who feel underserved by current leadership. Her focus on education, healthcare and women’s empowerment has struck a chord with voters as Oyam prepares for the 2026 elections.

“I’m not just running for office; I’m running to bring real change to Oyam,” Apili stated.

With her experience and commitment to serving the community, Apili is positioning herself as a leader who can not only advocate for the district but also deliver tangible results.

The 2026 elections could mark a new chapter for Oyam under Apili’s leadership.
