Teso-Lango Solidarity Strengthened as Kumi University Students Deliver Aid to Lira Regional Referral Hospital Patients

Lira, Uganda | In a compelling show of youth-led humanitarian action, a team of 50 students from Kumi University on Saturday extended both material and emotional support to patients at Lira Regional Referral Hospital, reinforcing their commitment to national service through a grassroots outreach campaign.

The initiative, driven by the Guild Government of Kumi University, is part of a broader regional engagement strategy aimed at building student leaders who are not only academically empowered but also socially responsible.

The students, led by their Guild President Oleja James, spent the day interacting with patients, cleaning hospital premises, and distributing soap across all wards.

According to Oleja, this outreach is part of a rotational charity campaign spanning various regions of Uganda. He said the team had been in Sebei the previous weekend and would be proceeding to Karamoja the following weekend, with Lira serving as a critical stop in their inter-regional solidarity journey.

He emphasized that the team’s focus was not just on donation but on making a meaningful connection with the communities they visited.

During the hospital visit, each patient received half a bar of soap — a small yet impactful gesture designed to address immediate hygiene needs.

Oleja observed that some of the most challenging scenes were in the orthopedic ward, where several patients lacked access to essential treatment materials.

He expressed concern about the difficult conditions, saying it was deeply moving to witness the struggles some patients face due to financial constraints.

In addition to offering emotional and material support, the students demonstrated hands-on commitment by thoroughly cleaning the Outpatient Department (OPD), Pediatrics, Male and Female wards, as well as the hospital compound and drainage systems — transforming the facility with a spirit of dignity and care.

Beyond material support, the students spent time offering words of encouragement, comfort, and emotional care to the patients — actions that hospital staff noted as equally vital to recovery and morale.

Kumi University’s Public Relations Officer, Caroline Akech, underscored the importance of the outreach in strengthening inter-regional relationships, particularly between the Teso and Lango sub-regions.

She explained that the initiative was more than a charitable gesture; it was a deliberate effort to build unity and foster shared values across cultural and geographical divides.

Akech stated that while students personally contributed to the items given out, the university administration supported the mission by providing transport, fuel, and other logistics.

She described the effort as a partnership model between students and the institution, driven by a shared vision of societal transformation.

This was the first time Kumi University extended its charity work to Lira, a move welcomed by both patients and health officials at the hospital.

The outreach forms part of a continuing program that will take the team next to Moroto and Nakapiripirit in the Karamoja region, as the university intensifies its focus on community-based learning and impact.

Through their actions, these students demonstrated that meaningful leadership begins with service, and that institutions of higher learning can play a vital role in addressing real-world challenges while instilling values of compassion and responsibility in future professionals
