Otuke, Uganda | Three people have been confirmed dead and 16 others injured following a fatal road accident that occurred in Otuke District on Thursday evening.
According to the North Kyoga Regional Police, the crash happened on April 16, 2026, at around 8:00pm in Agwila Village, Adyerakonya Parish, Adwari Sub-County.
The accident involved a green and white Isuzu motor vehicle registration number UBR 316D, which was reportedly carrying passengers returning from a burial.
Police say preliminary findings indicate that the yet-to-be-identified driver was allegedly speeding and using a mobile phone while driving when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn.
Three occupants died on the spot, while 16 others sustained injuries and were rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Orum Health Centre mortuary pending postmortem examination.
The deceased have been identified as: Akello Sarah, 30 female, Omara Jasper, 27 male and Odur Geoffrey, 25 male
all were residents of Lira City.
Police reports indicate that officers led by the OC Traffic visited the scene, documented evidence, and drew a rough sketch plan. The vehicle remains at the scene pending recovery.
Authorities say statements are yet to be recorded from victims as investigations continue, with a full case file to be submitted to the Resident State Attorney for legal guidance.
North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson SP Patrick Jimmy Okema described the incident as unfortunate and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
He also appealed to the public, especially drivers, to observe road safety regulations and avoid reckless driving practices such as speeding and phone use while driving, warning that such behavior continues to cause preventable loss of life.
