Oyam, Uganda – Police have arrested Emmanuel Akiteng, also known as Butaleja, over allegations of involvement in the deaths of six people in Nwoya district.
The victims reportedly died after stealing 19 sacks of sim sim from a local resident, prompting suspicions of witchcraft.
Following reports from the victims’ families, Nwoya Central Police Station launched an operation in coordination with Oyam police, leading to Akiteng’s capture.
According to Odong Francis Opyio, the officer in charge of operations in Oyam district, Akiteng was found hiding in a chilling board at his house in Western Ward, Loro Town Council. His girlfriend assisted police in locating him.
After the arrest, Akiteng was transferred to Nwoya Central Police Station and later moved to Kira Police headquarters in Kampala to ensure proper handling of the case and prevent local interference.
Sgt. Shilaku James, Resident District Commissioner of Oyam district, confirmed the arrest and transfer, stating that the move was necessary to uphold the integrity of the case.
Oyam District LC IV chairperson, Benson Walter Dila, commended the police for their efforts and urged the public to pursue the case through legal means.
He advised against reliance on witchdoctors and encouraged people to seek lawful solutions.
Akiteng has faced legal action before, having previously served time at Luzira Maximum Security Prison for human sacrifice.
His recent arrest has renewed discussions on the dangers of harmful rituals and illegal practices associated with witchcraft.
Residents, many of whom had lived in fear of Akiteng, have welcomed the arrest.
Authorities have assured the public that due process will be followed to ensure justice is served.
