Kaberamaido, Uganda | The planned landing of the Bukungu–Kaberamaido–Kagawara (BKK) ferry at Akamapala Landing Site in Kaberamaido District has been postponed due to heavy rains that affected the construction of the docking facility.

In a letter dated March 3, 2026, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kaberamaido District, Godfrey Kyakahuma, informed district stakeholders that the ferry was expected to dock at Akamapala Landing Site on March 6 at 10am.

He urged local leaders to mobilise residents, particularly those from neighbouring communities, to turn up in large numbers to welcome the ferry.

The BKK ferry service, which has already been launched, is expected to improve transportation and create economic opportunities between the Busoga and Teso sub-regions.

However, in another letter dated March 5, also signed by Kyakahuma, the planned landing was postponed after heavy rains disrupted the completion of the docking point at Akamapala Landing Site.

According to the RDC, the rains left the ground slippery, making the loading and off-loading of passengers and cargo unsafe.

Kyakahuma said a new date for the ferry’s landing in Kaberamaido will be communicated after the docking site is completed and conditions improve.

The District Councillor for Ochero Sub-county, David Ababa, expressed dissatisfaction over the delay, saying the ferry is already operational on the water.

Ababa questioned the continued postponement and warned that local leaders may raise a red flag if clear explanations are not provided.

He also cautioned that the people in the area should not feel sidelined, noting that prolonged delays could be perceived as marginalisation if the matter is not properly addressed.

Ababa further called on the RDC’s office to strengthen supervision of the works at the docking site and suggested that a site meeting be convened involving local leaders and the responsible engineer to resolve the issues.

The Assistant RDC of Kaberamaido District, Rashid Adaknu, also expressed concern about the supervision of works at the ferry docking site.

Adaknu said the site engineer is rarely present and described him as a visiting engineer who often leaves casual workers to manage the site and attend to visitors, which he said reflects weak supervision.

He also revealed that some casual labourers at the site have complained about delayed payments, a situation he believes has slowed progress.

Adaknu further questioned the idea of establishing a temporary docking facility, arguing that it could waste both time and resources.

He urged the RDC’s office to intensify supervision to ensure the docking point is completed properly and within the expected timeframe.
