Emorimor Warns of Rising Land Grabs as Teso’s Oil Discovery Stirs Tensions

Soroti, Uganda – His Royal Highness Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot Etomeileng, the Paramount chief of the Iteso has raised alarm over the escalating land disputes in Teso, warning that widows and orphans are at increasing risk of losing their rightful inheritance due to growing tensions fueled by the discovery of oil in the region.

Speaking during the announcement of a partnership between the Iteso Cultural Union and Redeem International, Emorimor stressed the urgent need to protect the land rights of vulnerable groups, who are often left defenseless against exploitation.

“Orphans are often the most vulnerable members of society, and the loss of land rights can further exacerbate their vulnerability as they may lack the legal representation and support needed to protect their rights, leading to long-term consequences for future generations by limiting their access to resources and opportunities,” he stated.

Andrew Ocole, Prime Minister of the Iteso Cultural Union, acknowledged that land grabbing by in-laws and the lack of access to justice remain serious challenges, leaving widows and orphans economically stranded.

He emphasized the need for broad partnerships to tackle not only land conflicts but also poverty, education, health, and infrastructure concerns.

“We are currently working hard to sign partnerships with many organizations in tackling issues pressing our people,” Ocole said.

Moses Elilu, the Regional Manager of Redeem International, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to ensuring the safety, legal rights and economic empowerment of widows and orphans in districts such as Kapelebyong, Amuria, Soroti, Kalaki and Kaberamaido.

The partnership between the Iteso Cultural Union and Redeem International is seen as a crucial step toward addressing these challenges.

Oil exploration is fueling new tensions over land ownership, making their joint efforts crucial in safeguarding the rights of widows and orphans, ensuring justice and protection for those most at risk.
