Former Real Madrid Coach Leo Beenhakker Dies at 82

Madrid, Spain – Leo Beenhakker, the legendary Dutch football manager best known for his successful spell with Real Madrid, has passed away at the age of 82.

Real Madrid C.F., in an official statement released Thursday, expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

“Real Madrid, its president and board of directors, are deeply saddened by the death of Leo Beenhakker,” the club said. “We extend our condolences and affection to his family, friends, and the many clubs and fans touched by his remarkable career.”

Beenhakker managed Real Madrid during two different stints – from 1986 to 1989 and briefly again in 1992. Under his guidance, the Spanish giants enjoyed a golden era, securing three consecutive LaLiga titles, a Copa del Rey trophy, and two Spanish Super Cups.

Known for his tactical intelligence and charismatic leadership, Beenhakker had a coaching career that spanned continents.

He also managed several high-profile clubs including Ajax and Feyenoord in his native Netherlands, winning multiple league titles and Super Cups with both.

Beyond club football, he left his mark on the international stage, managing national teams such as the Netherlands, Poland, Trinidad and Tobago, and Saudi Arabia. Most memorably, he led Trinidad and Tobago to their first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance in 2006.

His death marks the end of an era for many fans and players who remember his distinctive style and sharp football mind.

Real Madrid concluded their tribute by honoring his legacy: “Leo Beenhakker was part of the club’s history. May he rest in peace.”

Fans and football legends from across the globe are already paying tribute to a man who helped shape the modern game, both in Spain and beyond.
