Lira, Uganda – Fr. Emmanuel Opio, the Parish Priest of Lira Cathedral Parish, has called on political leaders to focus on bringing sustainable developmental projects to the people rather than resorting to distributing money to voters ahead of elections.
He made this statement during the second Mass at Uganda Martyrs Cathedral in Lira today.
Fr. Opio emphasized that leaders should direct their resources toward projects that can bring lasting change and improve the livelihoods of the people.
“Money given to voters is temporary, but developmental projects can transform lives for the better,” he said, urging political figures to think beyond short-term gains and focus on long-term solutions.
The priest also spoke about personal responsibility and hard work, sharing his own experience as an example.
“I am a hustler,” he said, “and I do not beg from anyone. We should not be quick to label others as corrupt when they are simply working hard to earn a living.”
His words resonated with many, as he encouraged his congregation to work diligently and avoid judging others based on assumptions.
Fr. Opio further advised Christians who receive a monthly salary to explore additional sources of income.
“Relying on just one source of income is risky,” he explained. “Investing in side hustles can provide financial security and help you build a more stable future.”
His call for hard work, financial independence and responsible leadership aims to inspire positive change both within the community and at the political level.
