Kole, Uganda – The Woman MP for Kole District and Chairperson of Lango Parliamentary Group, Hon. Judith Alyek, has urged university students to prioritize their health and education while raising awareness about the dangers of HIV/AIDS and sickle cell disease.
Speaking at a meeting with students she is sponsoring at various universities across Uganda, held at Serena Guest House in Aboke Town Council on December 29, 2024, Hon. Alyek stressed the importance of informed health decisions to safeguard their future.
“HIV continues to spread silently, especially among young people,” she said. “We need to break the silence and encourage regular testing. Knowing your status is essential for protecting yourself and your community.”
She expressed concern over the high HIV prevalence among the youth and emphasized the need for preventive measures, including proper testing during pregnancy to eliminate mother-to-child transmission.
In addition to HIV, Hon. Alyek highlighted the growing burden of sickle cell disease in the community. She called on the students to advocate for testing to identify sickle cell traits early.
“Sickle cell is a serious health issue in our region,” she said. “I urge everyone to get tested and understand their genetic status. This knowledge is crucial, especially when planning for marriage, to reduce the risk of passing the disease to the next generation.”

Hon. Alyek shared alarming statistics, revealing that a significant percentage of people remain unaware of their sickle cell status, resulting in preventable health challenges.
She encouraged the students to be ambassadors of health awareness in their communities by educating others about the importance of testing for both HIV and sickle cell.
Beyond health, the MP reminded the students of the transformative power of education, urging them to remain focused on their studies.
“Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty,” she said. “You are the future leaders of Kole District. Use this opportunity to build a better life for yourselves and to uplift our community.”
Hon. Alyek encouraged the students to make responsible decisions and take advantage of every opportunity for personal growth and community development.
