Kampala, Uganda – The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, on Thursday, April 3rd, launched the construction of 1,200 housing apartments at Naguru Barracks in Kampala.

The ambitious project, expected to be completed within the next 12 months, aims to provide decent and secure accommodation for police officers and their families, enhancing their living standards and overall well-being.
Addressing a gathering of senior police officials, contractors, and engineers, IGP Byakagaba emphasized the urgency of the project’s timely delivery, urging the construction team to remain focused and efficient in meeting the 12-month deadline.
The construction of the housing units is being overseen by the Police Construction Unit, a specialized department under the Directorate of Logistics and Engineering.
The project is set to transform the living conditions at the Naguru Barracks, where a large portion of Uganda’s police personnel are currently stationed.
AIGP Dr. Namutebi Hadijjah, the Director of Welfare Production and Sports, spoke passionately about the importance of the project, highlighting that adequate housing for police officers is not a luxury but a fundamental right.
She emphasized that when officers are housed in secure and decent accommodation, their morale is boosted, their efficiency is enhanced, and their loyalty to the force is strengthened.
The housing units are designed to provide officers with safe and comfortable living spaces for themselves and their families, a critical factor in reducing stress and improving their overall quality of life.
The project will also contribute to the broader efforts to modernize and professionalize the police force, ensuring that officers can perform their duties in an environment conducive to efficiency and well-being.
AIGP James Apora, who has been assigned to oversee the project, expressed confidence that the construction will be completed on schedule and to the highest standards.
He reassured the public that a dedicated team of engineers has been mobilized to ensure the timely completion of the housing units, emphasizing that the project’s success is paramount.
The Naguru Barracks housing project is part of a larger effort by the Uganda Police Force to improve the working and living conditions of its personnel, who often face significant challenges in the line of duty.
The police force has long been advocating for better accommodation to enhance officers’ effectiveness in serving the nation.
This development is a clear indication that the government is serious about improving the welfare of security personnel, recognizing the importance of their work and the need to provide them with the necessary tools to perform their duties efficiently.
The project is expected to have a far-reaching impact on the police force’s performance, with improved housing playing a crucial role in boosting officer morale, productivity, and commitment to serving the people of Uganda.
All eyes will be on the timely completion of the project, which is set to become a shining example of the government’s commitment to ensuring that those who protect and serve the nation do so from a place of comfort and security.
