Otuke District – In a heartwarming and historic event, 60 wheelchairs were donated to People with Disabilities (PWDs) in Otuke district, Uganda. This remarkable initiative was made possible through the collaborative efforts of O.J Disability Care foundation, Otuke East Constituency MP Hon Julius Acon Bua, and Otuke woman MP Susan Jolly Abeja.

The donation ceremony, held at Barodugu ward, Akai idebe cell in Otuke town council, was a testament to the power of unity and compassion. The wheelchairs, worth 120M, will provide invaluable mobility and independence to PWDs in the district, enabling them to participate fully in their communities.

Julius Opoi, Executive Director of O.J Disability Care foundation, shared his personal story of struggling to access a wheelchair during his childhood. This experience fueled his determination to support others with similar challenges. “I have always moved across the country supporting such people, but with the help of local authorities, I am able to reach out to more people, and God’s mission gets accomplished,” he said.

The MPs emphasized the importance of inclusion and representation for PWDs in all spheres of life. “We must consider people living with disabilities in all aspects of life, ensuring they are represented in government and have access to education,” said Opoi. Abeja added, “We must love, educate, and support PWDs, recognizing their potential to become important contributors to our society.”

Beneficiaries expressed their heartfelt gratitude, with Tom Eyen commending the MPs for their selfless efforts. “Abeja and Acon are the only MPs serving the interests of the people who elected them,” he said. Collin Akello highlighted the impact of the wheelchairs, saying, “We can now sell commodities instead of begging.”

This initiative serves as a shining example of what can be achieved through collective efforts and a commitment to inclusivity. As the beneficiaries begin their journey with their new wheelchairs, the community comes together to celebrate a major step forward for PWDs in Otuke district.
