Lira, Uganda – The Lango tribe will proudly participate in a prestigious cultural event at Migwena Cultural & Sports Center, Siaya County, Kenya, from 31st December 2024 to 2nd January 2025.
This event, themed “Luo Unity and Diversity in the Diaspora,” will unite cultural leaders from across the Luo community, fostering collaboration and strengthening cultural ties.
The event is hosted by Siaya County Governor James Orengo, with distinguished guest speakers including Gladys Wanga (Homabay County Governor), Ochilo Ayacko (Migori County Governor), and Anyang’ Nyong’o (Kisumu County Governor).
It promises to provide a platform for dialogue on Luo culture, heritage preservation, and infrastructural development across Luo-speaking regions.
Speaking on behalf of the Lango delegation, Clan Head (Awitong) of Pedi Wibye Acel, Willy Omodo Omodo, confirmed their attendance and shared details of the event.
“We received an official invitation from the organizers to attend this important gathering. It is an opportunity for Lango to share our rich cultural heritage, display regalia, and discuss developmental strategies that unite Luo communities globally,” he said.
The Lango delegation will include 40 clan heads and cultural leaders, showcasing the tribe’s commitment to preserving and promoting its heritage.
The group also features a unique addition—Amot, a Primary Six pupil from V.H. Public School.
Amot recently in December 2024 impressed audiences from Kenya with a powerful poem during an event at Magarita Hotel, Lira, earning a special invitation from the organizers.
“This gathering is reminiscent of the Atekere Reunion Festival held in Soroti City late this year. It is another platform to celebrate our shared history and discuss ways to advance our culture and infrastructure,” Omodo Omodo remarked.
The event will include cultural displays, panel discussions, and interactive sessions designed to foster unity and generate innovative ideas for community development.
Discussions will focus on infrastructure, cultural preservation, and the promotion of education and talent within Luo communities.
Registration for interested individuals is ongoing, with organizers encouraging broader participation.
Omodo Omodo called for the active involvement of all stakeholders, saying, “This is a time to unite and work together for the benefit of our communities. We urge those interested to register and join us in this historic event.”
The Migwena Cultural & Sports Center will serve as the perfect backdrop for this vibrant celebration of Luo identity, history, and aspirations.
Leaders and participants hope the event will strengthen ties between Luo-speaking communities in Kenya, Uganda, and beyond, paving the way for collaborative development initiatives.
As the Lango delegation prepares to embark on this journey, the cultural exchange symbolizes the unbreakable bond between the Luo-speaking peoples and their shared commitment to progress and unity.
For those interested in attending or supporting the delegation, registration is still open.
Together, the Lango and Luo communities aim to build bridges of cultural understanding and lay foundations for future collaboration.
