Langowood Dream: Paramount Chief Pushes for Lango’s Own Film Industry to Preserve Culture, Create Jobs

Kampala, Uganda – The Paramount Chief of Lango, His Royal Highness Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, is spearheading a cultural renaissance by proposing the establishment of a local film industry dubbed Langowood.

This bold initiative, aimed at preserving the rich traditions of the Lango people, comes as a response to the growing dominance of foreign content from Hollywood, Bollywood and Nollywood in local entertainment spaces.

According to the cultural leader, Langowood would serve as a creative platform to tell Lango’s untold stories, highlight community customs and showcase the region’s unique cultural practices, including its music, poetry, folklore and traditional ceremonies.

The envisioned industry is not only about cultural pride-it also aims to create employment for young creatives, actors, scriptwriters, editors and filmmakers across Lango Sub-region.

The Paramount Chief believes that establishing a thriving local film sector would give the Lango people a powerful tool to reclaim their cultural narrative and restore dignity to their heritage.

With the influx of foreign films shaping perceptions and influencing lifestyles, Eng. Odongo Okune argues that local content is crucial in shaping identity and instilling values, especially among the youth.

He sees Langowood as a long-term investment that can drive economic empowerment.

By promoting local talent and fostering creativity, the project could unlock new income streams through film distribution, tourism, and digital streaming.

It would also open opportunities for collaboration with national and international cultural institutions.

In a broader sense, the Paramount Chief ties this initiative to the responsible use of modern technology.

He is encouraging young people to use digital platforms like YouTube, TikTok and Instagram to share stories, performances and cultural pieces rooted in Lango heritage.

He believes that with proper content development and community support, Langowood could reach global audiences and build a positive image of the Lango people on the international stage.

As part of his vision, he has also renewed his appeal for the government and development partners to support the construction of a national theatre in the region.

He says such a facility could serve as a base for training, showcasing talent, and hosting major cultural events tied to the emerging film industry.

The proposal to create Langowood arrives at a time when cultural preservation has become increasingly urgent in the face of globalization.

The Paramount Chief’s dream is to ensure that the next generation of Lango people grows up with pride in their roots, sees themselves reflected in their screens and contributes to a thriving cultural economy.
