Lira, Uganda | Authorities in Lira City are considering closing Al-Aqsa Islamic School following a classroom collapse that injured two learners and raised alarm over the safety of school structures.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at around 12:55 PM during a lesson when a section of the classroom ceiling and supporting beam suddenly gave way, sending learners into panic as they rushed to escape from the collapsing structure.

According to the deputy head teacher, Holga Anyango, two learners sustained injuries in the chaos. One suffered a nosebleed while another sustained minor injuries. The victims were rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
Lira City Education Officer Canon Jane Obeny described the affected two-storeyed building as structurally unsound, warning that it poses a continued risk to learners and staff.
She noted that preliminary assessments indicate serious weaknesses in the structure and cautioned that further collapse could occur if urgent interventions are not undertaken.
Obeny said the city is awaiting a detailed technical report from engineers to inform a final decision on whether the school will be closed or the building demolished.
The incident has triggered a city-wide inspection of school facilities, with authorities vowing to take tough action against institutions operating in unsafe environments.
Police have since opened investigations into the cause of the collapse as part of efforts to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
