Lira City, Uganda – Lira City Central Police Station has apprehended two key suspects connected to a widespread counterfeit money scheme that has been targeting local businesses and residents.
With several accomplices still at large, authorities are actively pursuing leads in hopes of dismantling the entire operation.
The arrests were made following a report by a local businessman, Mr. Ekwang William, whose wife, Akullo Esther, was one of the victims lured into the illicit operation.
According to North Kyoga Police spokesperson SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, suspects Amuza Sam and Otim Ambrose, also known as Abaka, allegedly promised victims significant financial returns in exchange for their money, only to provide them with counterfeit notes.
A search of the suspects’ premises resulted in the seizure of counterfeit notes worth UGX 22,550,000, along with materials used for producing the notes, such as bottles of chemicals and powder-like substances.
One of the arrested suspects, Amuza Hamza, has a previous criminal record involving counterfeit activities.
Last April, he was apprehended after an angry mob burned his car in Lira City West Division.
At a press briefing on Monday, SP Okema condemned the increasing number of counterfeit schemes in the community, emphasizing the importance of public awareness and cooperation in combating these crimes.
He urged community members to avoid falling prey to quick money schemes and instead focus on legitimate means of earning income.
“Our community members must play an active role in preventing these crimes. If someone offers you a quick money scheme, reject it and instead focus on earning your money through legal and legitimate means,” SP Okema stated.
The investigation is ongoing, and the apprehended suspects will likely face charges of issuing counterfeit notes upon its completion.
Police encourage the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to counterfeit money, underscoring the importance of a collaborative approach in safeguarding the community’s economic integrity.
