Lira, Uganda – Lira District Woman MP Agnes Linda Auma has ushered in the New Year with a transformative initiative to install solar street lights across 35 trading centres in the district.
Speaking to Dokolo Post reporter, Auma unveiled her ambitious plan to boost security, enhance business opportunities, and foster development in Lira District, which has faced challenges following the creation of Lira City.
In her speech, Auma declared 2025 as a year of action, emphasizing the need to address pressing issues affecting her constituents.
She highlighted security concerns, particularly nighttime robberies, and the challenges faced by women vendors working in poorly lit areas.
“This project is born out of love and a desire to see Lira District thrive,” she stated.
The initiative, which kicked off on December 31, 2024, in Amach Town Council, involves the installation of Golden Sun 600W solar street lights.
These state-of-the-art lights are equipped with durable lithium batteries and have a lifespan of 6-7 years.
On January 2, 2025, the project extended to Bar, Ogur, and Agweng Town Councils, with plans to cover other trading centres in Erute South and North in subsequent phases.
“This is not a government project; it is my personal contribution to the people of Lira District,” Auma clarified, adding that the initiative will complement government efforts.
The project, valued at UGX 30 million, is being implemented by Sprint Technical Works and General Supplies Ltd, headed by Managing Director Atoo Daniel.
The solar street lights are already transforming lives. Susan Ogwal, a vendor in Amach Town Council, expressed her gratitude, noting how the lights would enable her to extend her business hours. “I can now sell tomatoes even at night,” she said.
Similarly, Okello Kennedy hailed the initiative as a beacon of development, urging MP Auma to continue her impactful work.
Auma also urged residents to take full responsibility for protecting and maintaining the lights, warning against allowing political saboteurs to destroy the infrastructure.
Beyond infrastructure, Auma encouraged healthcare workers in the region to seize international employment opportunities by enrolling at the Jerusalem Institute of Health Sciences in Lira to learn German.
She announced that by October 2025, some medics would be flying to Germany for work.
Concluding her address, Auma advised her constituents to prepare their gardens for the rainy season, acknowledging that while she strives to meet their needs, self-reliance remains key.
She also called on fellow leaders to join hands in accelerating Lira District’s development.
This initiative is a testament to Auma’s commitment to fostering progress and addressing the immediate needs of her constituents.
With the rollout of solar street lights, Lira District is not only becoming safer but is also poised for economic growth and community transformation.
Residents and leaders alike are optimistic that MP Auma’s actions will inspire other leaders to take similarly bold steps toward development in 2025.
