Nairobi, Kenya | President William Ruto, on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, handed over 1,080 housing units to residents of Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Nairobi, marking a major milestone in the government’s Affordable Housing Programme.
Speaking during the official commissioning of the project, President Ruto described the event as a turning point in his administration’s agenda to restore dignity to low-income Kenyans.
Visibly jubilant, the Head of State expressed his fulfilment through praise songs, scripture references, and prayers, calling the moment one of the most meaningful days of his political career.
He stated that critics had doubted the possibility of such a project and labelled him a liar, but emphasized that the handover proved them wrong.
He said the achievement showed that it was indeed possible to relocate the desolate and provide them with a decent standard of living.
The President revealed that the Tuesday handover was only the first phase.
He announced that an additional 5,000 housing units would be ready for distribution in August or September, with another 5,000 set for handover early next year.
The government, he said, aimed to deliver a total of 13,000 houses to the people of Mukuru Kwa Njenga.
Ruto explained that the project had already injected Ksh.11 billion into construction and neighbourhood development and projected that a total of Ksh.28 billion would be infused into the economy through this single initiative.
He stressed that the goal of the housing programme was not only to provide homes but also to stimulate economic growth and employment.
He said that the development was transforming Mukuru into an economic hub, with expectations of new businesses emerging—such as corner shops, daycares, clinics, schools, and digital start-ups.
He added that young people would now have opportunities to establish gyms, salons, delivery services, and studios.
According to Ruto, the housing project includes:
● 3.2 kilometres of new roads
● 14,321 square meters of parking space
● 9 kilometres of walkways
● 3.9 kilometres of sewer lines
● 32 transformer houses
● A fire station, health centre, daycare facilities, and a strip mall
● Waste rooms, pump rooms
● A 5-million-litre underground water tank
● High-level storage tanks with a 210,000-litre capacity
● Booster pumps and a fire water system
He noted that these facilities were designed not only to accommodate residents but also to provide essential services, enhance safety, and elevate the quality of life.
The President urged Kenyans, especially low-income earners, to register on the Boma Yangu portal, which he described as the official platform for managing applications under the Affordable Housing Programme.
He explained that the registration would give citizens a fair chance of owning a home in future allocations.
He affirmed that the government was not merely building houses but nurturing communities grounded in dignity, security, and opportunity, and stressed that this initiative was already making a tangible difference in the lives of Kenyans.
The Mukuru Kwa Njenga project stands as one of the key pillars of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s Affordable Housing Programme, aiming to address the national housing deficit and transform informal settlements into sustainable urban communities.
