Lira, Uganda | Residents of Kakoge B Cell in Lira City West Division were left in shock on Tuesday after a decomposing body of an unidentified adult male was discovered dumped inside a pit latrine at a secondary school, prompting a police investigation into suspected murder.

The grim discovery was made at Savior Secondary School in Ojwina Ward and was reported to police at around 9:30am on February 3, 2026, by the school director, Johnson Adupa (57).

According to police, the exact date of death has not yet been established.

Preliminary findings suggest that the deceased may have been murdered elsewhere before the body was transported and concealed in the school latrine.

A statement issued by the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, indicates that the latrine manhole cover appeared to have been removed, the body placed inside, and the cover replaced—pointing to a deliberate attempt to hide the remains.

A team comprising the District Police Commander, homicide detectives, crime intelligence officers, Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO), the Fire Brigade, and other officers visited and documented the scene.

The Fire Brigade later retrieved the body, which was conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Police also noted that the school premises are neither fenced nor guarded, a security lapse investigators say may have enabled the dumping of the body without detection.

The identity of the deceased remains unknown, and no suspects have been arrested. Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and to identify those responsible.

The incident has heightened concerns among residents over safety and security, particularly around schools and public institutions.
