Lira, Uganda | Uganda’s motocross ambitions continue to gain momentum, with the country now ranked third on the African continent in the sport, according to Jimmy James Michael Akena, Member of Parliament for Lira City East and President of the Federation of Motorsports Clubs of Uganda (FMU).

The announcement comes following the successful conclusion of the 4th round of the Mountain Dew National Motocross Championship held over the weekend in Omito, Lira City.

The two-day event drew record-breaking crowds and enthusiastic support, reflecting the sport’s growing popularity beyond traditional urban centers.

Held on a newly constructed track carved out of a reclaimed sand mining site, the championship saw thrilling performances from top national riders.

Among the standout winners was Wazir Ali Omar, who dominated the MX1 category, securing first place in his first appearance this year.

In other categories, local favorite Milton Akaki returned to competitive racing after a seven-month break and impressed fans with his energetic performance, though he narrowly missed a podium finish.

His presence electrified the home crowd and signaled a strong comeback.

Uganda’s strong showing in national events like this has fueled its continental ranking, with riders consistently putting up competitive performances.

Akena noted that preparations are already underway for the upcoming African Motocross Championship in Zimbabwe, where Uganda aims to push further toward the top.

“…This is like a league every year there’s a new champion…,” he said, emphasizing the importance of grooming the next generation of riders through local events and grassroots engagement.

The Lira event also highlighted a growing number of female competitors from the Lango sub-region, showcasing inclusivity and rising interest in the sport.

Akena praised the enthusiasm of both riders and fans, noting that Uganda’s motocross future is promising if current efforts in decentralization, talent development, and infrastructure improvement are maintained.
