Oyam, Uganda | The Organization called Women Of Uganda Network abbrivated as WOUGNET with tramendious support from their co-organization Know as Labnet Uganda has switched full light towards enhancing Gender Inclusivity in Internet accessibility In the localities of Oyam District infavour of Women,Girls, Poeple With Disabilities and School going children and many other categories in the community.
According to WOUGNET and Labnet reseachers represented by Alexander Muhangi a graduate researcher at Makerere Univrrsity concluded that very small fractions of Women and girls in Oyam District are in better position of utilizing internet usage amidst the high speed of digitalization of Uganda’s Economy, and so much effort is required to secure the women in rural communities in line to digital accesses.
Mrs. Sandra Aceng the Executive Director for WOUGNET stated that since the start of the Organization in May 2000 by serveral women’s Organization in Uganda to develop the information and comnunication Technologies (ICT) among women as tools to share information and address issues collectively.
Aceng assured a number of women and stakeholders of Oyam district who dearly attended the interception meeting that WOUGNET will be implementing a project tittled “Enhancing Digital Inclusion in Northern Uganda, Oyam District: Piloting a rural broadband connectivity modle.”
As it was done in Apac District giving an example of Kubere Information Centre and Maruhzi seed , Apac General Hospital and many others.
“…This Initiative aims to improve digital accessibility and usage in Oyam District through the establishment of a free internet access point in selected localities. In addition, the project will include the setup of digital empowerment centres and the delivery of digital literacy trainnings to enhance community skill and engagement…” ,Said Mrs. Donna Beatrice Adong Otim the Oyam District WUOGNET progammes coordinator.
Sg. Shilaku James the Resident District Commissioner Of Oyam District grately appreciated the intiative brought by WOUGNET towards pioritizing women and girls in digital access to information thourgh internet connectivity.
Commissioner Shilaku in his Offical remark appeal to the two bodies to consider areas like Kamdini Town council being a business boomming point and highly populated, Ngai Sub county, Iceme Sub County, Loro Town council, Iceme Town council and Oyam town council to supply learning insitutions, Health Facilities, Government Adiministrative Units, Worship places and local communities with internet access point.
Mr. Micheal Okello the General manager of Shine Fm Radio in Oyam whose station was sighted suitable for internet server Installation warmly welcome the project initiative in his full capacity and assured the local beneficiary of Oyam free and full time accessibility to the the internet at shine fm once installation is done with due time.
Hon. Steven Okello the Mayor for Oyam town council also acknowledge that this implementation is a good one and he engourage women to maximize it fully, He added that married women must access the the internet for right purposes at the right time to avoid bring up Domestic Violences in our families.
Mirriam Atoo the LC1 Chairperson Of Nursing Quaters cell in Oyam town council who also attended the interception meeting by the press time could not hide her exitment on imagination of being released from expenses of purchasing data boundles to access internet just for little time but expensively.
However, Molly Akoli a senior resident of Teduka cell Oyam town council and business woman kown for her resturant business and Poultry keeping prove her worries about adolesences girls and boys who are moreover school going children that might use internet connectivity to access pornographic images and videos hence disrupting their emtions.
