1,748 Graduate from UTC Lira, Strengthening Uganda’s Technical Workforce

Lira, UgandaUganda Technical College (UTC) Lira celebrated a landmark achievement yesterday, 22nd November 2024, as 1,748 students graduated with National and Higher Diplomas in critical engineering fields. These include Building & Construction, Water & Sanitation, Electrical Engineering, and Architecture.

The ceremony, held at the college’s main campus, marked a significant contribution to Uganda’s growing technical workforce, with 215 female graduates among the cohort, reflecting increasing gender inclusivity in technical education.

“Institutions must stop offering courses that lead to unemployment. Focus on programs that empower students with relevant, in-demand skills,” said Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni, Minister of Education and Sports, in a speech delivered by Ms. Loy Abaine Muhwezi, Commissioner for Vocational and Technical Education, at the 10th Graduation Ceremony of Uganda Technical College (UTC) Lira.

Principal Jacob Akunobere addressed the graduates, emphasizing the need for innovation and excellence in their professional journeys.

“The world is competitive, and I advise that when out in your different fields, show the world that you are the best, equipped with appropriate knowledge,” he urged.

Akunobere also lauded the government’s commitment to enhancing the institution’s resources, which he said had greatly improved student enrollment and learning outcomes.

Stephen Odongo, Deputy Resident City Commissioner for Lira City East Division, commended the graduates for their achievements and highlighted the opportunities provided by the NRM government.

He encouraged the public to harness the available development initiatives to drive socio-economic growth.

“The technical skills gained here are vital for the transformation of our communities. I urge everyone to support the NRM’s efforts in fostering development and education,” Odongo stated.

UTC Lira’s graduation is a testament to Uganda’s focus on building a skilled and competent workforce to meet the demands of a rapidly industrializing nation.

The graduates, equipped with specialized training in technical disciplines, are poised to address critical infrastructure challenges in Uganda and beyond.

One of the graduates, Patricia Akello, who earned a Diploma in Architecture, shared her optimism: “I am proud to be part of this journey. UTC Lira has equipped us not just with skills but with the confidence to compete globally.”

The event drew attendees from government, academia, and the private sector, all united in celebrating the college’s role in shaping Uganda’s future.

UTC Lira has positioned itself as a beacon of excellence, producing graduates who are not only technically adept but also innovative and solutions-driven.

As Uganda embarks on major infrastructure projects and technological advancements, the contribution of institutions like UTC Lira can’t be overstated.
