Lira, Uganda | Twenty amputees from the Lango sub-region have received prosthetic limbs under a joint initiative by the Suman Foundation and the Lira Regional Referral Hospital aimed at restoring mobility, dignity, and independence among persons living with limb loss.
The prosthetic limbs were fitted and calibrated by the hospital’s Orthopaedic Department led by Raphael Omodi before being handed over to the beneficiaries during a ceremony held on Friday, June 20, 2026.
According to hospital officials, the beneficiaries include people who lost their limbs through road traffic accidents, occupational injuries, and medical amputations resulting from conditions such as diabetes and severe infections.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Venkatesh Manepali, the manager of Suman Foundation, commended the management and staff of Lira Regional Referral Hospital for their cooperation in implementing the programme.
“We are grateful for the collaboration and commitment demonstrated by Lira Regional Referral Hospital. Through this partnership, we have been able to reach individuals whose lives can be transformed through access to prosthetic care. Our goal is to restore hope, mobility and opportunity to those living with disabilities,” Manepali said.
Representing the hospital director, the hospital administrator, Emmanuel Ogwang, thanked Suman Foundation for its support towards improving the welfare of vulnerable people in the region.
“Lira Regional Referral Hospital remains committed to working with development partners, charitable organisations and other stakeholders to expand access to quality healthcare services. We appreciate Suman Foundation for choosing to support our patients and communities through this life-changing intervention,” Ogwang said.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the foundation and the hospital, saying the prosthetic limbs would greatly enhance their mobility, restore their self-confidence and enable them to participate more actively in social and economic activities.
The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by the hospital and its partners to improve rehabilitation services and promote the inclusion of persons living with disabilities in Northern Uganda.
