Lira City – In a move that is set to reshape Uganda’s political landscape, the Democratic Party (DP) held a historic consultative meeting in Lira City on June 11th. The meeting marked a significant turning point in the party’s history, as it charts a new path towards political cooperation, grassroots empowerment, and strategic growth.
The meeting was attended by top party leaders, including Dr. Gerald Siranda, the DP Secretary General, and Herbert Rutagwera, the National Organizing Secretary. Also in attendance were chairpersons from various districts in the Lango sub-region, who were presented with party cards by Dr. Siranda.
The meeting was highlighted by the announcement of a strategic alliance between the DP and the National Resistance Movement (NRM). This historic partnership is aimed at promoting peace, stability, and constructive political dialogue in Uganda.
“The alliance with the NRM is not just a political maneuver; it is a commitment to a peaceful and stable Uganda,” said Dr. Siranda. “We believe this partnership will pave the way for constructive political dialogue and cooperation.”
The meeting also focused on empowering the party’s grassroots leaders. Dr. Siranda distributed party cards to chairpersons from various districts in the Lango sub-region, reaffirming the party’s commitment to strengthening its base.
“Our goal is to ensure that every DP member feels valued and equipped to contribute to our mission,” Dr. Siranda emphasized.
Despite the party’s advancements, grassroots mobilizers face significant challenges. Paska Grace Ogwang, Chairperson of the DP in Otuke District, highlighted issues such as a shortage of party cards and inadequate transportation resources.
Herbert Rutagwera delivered a passionate address emphasizing the need for national consensus and electoral reforms. He stressed that the DP’s political vision is centered on addressing Uganda’s current issues through inclusive dialogue and strategic reforms.
The DP unveiled its strategic roadmap, outlining its plan to become a dominant force in Ugandan politics. The roadmap includes rebuilding party structures, activating party organs, and promoting internal democracy and transparency.
The party announced several key events, including a national council meeting in Soroti on July 5th and a National Delegates conference at the end of September. These gatherings are crucial for organizing and preparing the party for the 2026 elections.
