Jannet Akello Picks NRM Nomination Forms, Launches Bid for Alebtong Woman MP Seat

Alebtong, Uganda | The race for the Alebtong District Woman Member of Parliament seat under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has officially intensified following the entry of Jannet Akello Omara Orech, popularly known as “Apur Pi Opur”, meaning “A Farmer for Farmers.”

Akello picked her nomination forms from the NRM Electoral Commission offices earlier this week, marking her return to active politics and setting the stage for what is expected to be a hotly contested primary in the Lango sub-region.

A respected community mobilizer and advocate for rural development, Akello has pledged to run a transformative, issue-driven campaign centered on empowering communities, not creating dependency.

Her priorities include improving service delivery, promoting women’s empowerment, expanding education access, and enhancing agricultural productivity in Alebtong.

Analysts and political observers say Akello enters the race as a serious contender, known for her bold leadership style and deep grassroots connection.

Her supporters believe she brings the credibility and practical experience needed to reposition Alebtong’s representation at the national level.

But even as she builds political momentum at home, Akello is drawing widespread attention for her humanitarian efforts far from the campaign trail.

A Beacon of Kindness at Namugongo

During this year’s Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations, Akello quietly transformed her Namugongo residence into a shelter for stranded pilgrims many of them from Northern Uganda who were unable to return home after the national event.

Between June 3rd and 6th, she mobilized resources to feed thousands of pilgrims, provide access to clean water and bathing facilities, and offer shelter to the exhausted faithful.

Her compassion, which she has quietly extended for years, stood out even more this year, with volunteers from across backgrounds joining the effort.

Her acts of service have drawn admiration from both religious and political circles, with many describing her as a modern-day symbol of servant leadership.

While others marked the day through public ceremony, Akello lived its meaning—giving selflessly, expecting nothing in return.

Back in Alebtong, she continues to lead various development initiatives, including distributing improved seeds, coffee and cocoa seedlings, and supporting mechanized farming for local farmers.

Her leadership has earned her names like “Imat Waa” (Mother to All) and “Tara Waa” (A Leader Who Walks With Her People).

Leadership Rooted in Action

As the NRM prepares for internal elections, Akello’s dual role of aspiring legislator and community servant is being closely watched.

Her unique ability to bridge compassion and politics is reshaping perceptions of leadership, especially in rural areas.

While many contenders are defined by political slogans, Apur Pi Opur is carving a profile based on action.

Her presence in Namugongo and the initiatives in Alebtong have elevated her status as a woman of purpose—one who leads from the front and walks with the people.
