ULS Condemns Arrest of Blogger Obonyo Patrick, Calls for Protection of Free Speech

Kampala, Uganda | The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has raised concern over the arrest of blogger Obonyo Patrick, warning that detaining citizens for sharing their views on elections risks undermining freedom of expression and eroding trust in democratic processes.

In a statement posted on its X account on Monday, the Society stressed that protecting the right of citizens to speak freely is fundamental to a healthy democracy.

The statement was signed by ULS Vice President Asimwe Anthony.

The Society also noted that arrests like this can create fear among ordinary citizens, discouraging them from engaging in public debates or holding leaders accountable.

Obonyo Patrick, a blogger from the Lango sub-region, was reportedly detained after publishing comments in Luo (Leb Lango) alleging irregularities involving a religious leader and the use of church premises during voting.

The arrest has sparked reactions on social media, reflecting public unease over what many see as a disproportionate response.

Wejuli Edwin described the detention as bewildering and almost absurd, while Seguya Enock highlighted the constitutional importance of free speech, calling the arrest an overreach that threatens citizens’ ability to speak out.

Several social media users praised the ULS for standing up to protect civic freedoms and ensuring that citizens feel safe to voice concerns about matters of public interest.

The ULS has urged the Uganda Police Force and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to provide a clear legal justification for the arrest and to release Obonyo if no lawful grounds exist.

The Society reiterated that elections are of national concern, and citizens must be free to critique processes and leaders without fear of reprisal.

Legal experts say the case highlights the delicate balance between law enforcement and civil liberties, warning that restricting public discussion could undermine trust in the electoral process and discourage meaningful civic participation.
