Apac, Uganda | Police in Apac District are investigating the sudden death of a 70-year-old man who was found dead in his house hours after spending the night with his lover, in a case that has sparked shock and concern among residents.

The deceased, identified as Alyanga Alex, a peasant farmer and resident of Owang Cell, Owang Ward in Arocha Division, was discovered unresponsive on the morning of January 31, 2026.

According to a statement issued by the North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the incident was reported to Apac Central Police Station at about 10:55am on February 1, 2026, by Apio Judith, a resident of Apac Municipality.

Preliminary police findings indicate that Alyanga had been in an intimate relationship for over a year with Ayugi Molly, a 40-year-old peasant farmer from the same area, following the death of her husband.

Police allege that on the afternoon of January 31, the suspect visited the deceased’s home in the company of two other women, carrying alcohol.

The group reportedly drank together before leaving later in the evening. However, at around 11:00pm, Ayugi is said to have returned alone to the deceased’s home a routine police say had become common and spent the night there.

At about 6:00am, the deceased’s daughter, Agoa Winny, woke up to carry out her morning chores and later attempted to wake her father, but he did not respond.

She alerted her cousin, Otim Geoffrey, who was also at the home. Upon opening the house, they found Alyanga lying motionless and later confirmed him dead.

The suspect was summoned back to the scene to explain what may have happened. She admitted to having spent the night with the deceased but reportedly did not raise any alarm after leaving the home in the morning.

Police registered a case of sudden death and dispatched a Scene of Crime team from Apac CPS, led by the Deputy Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigations Department, to document the scene.

Ayugi was subsequently arrested and is currently being held at Apac CPS to assist with investigations.

The body of the deceased was conveyed to Apac Main Hospital Mortuary pending a postmortem examination. Police said no physical exhibits were immediately recovered at the scene.

However, investigators noted that blood was observed coming from the deceased’s mouth and nose, raising suspicion of possible poisoning, pending medical confirmation.

“Preliminary observations indicate that the suspect was the last known person seen with the deceased alive. Investigations into the exact cause of death are ongoing, and further action will depend on the postmortem findings,” SP Okema said.

Police extended condolences to the bereaved family and called for calm as inquiries continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
